UCC Literary Talent on Show

If you are around Cork this Wednesday evening and like new writing, you might want to drop into the Boole Library in University College Cork, for the launch of the Quarryman Journal. The journal is the work of UCC English and Creative Writing undergraduates, post-graduates and lecturing staff and is a treasure trove of new and exciting writing. Irish writing is thriving and this journal proves it, with some wonderful contributions from students and staff alike.

The Quarryman Journal, printed by Lettertec and with a foreword by poet Leanne O’Sullivan, features a range of different writing and styles, from flash fiction to new voices in poetry and short story writing. Alongside those who are newer to writing, come pieces from Prof. Graham Allen, Patrick Kavanagh Award Winner, John FitzGerald and Pat Cotter.

Quarryman has a long history in UCC, albeit in different guises. It was originally published as the Q.C.C., a student magazine with a small literary section included. It slept quietly for nearly 30 years, until it was revived by the post-graduate Creative Writing class, in 2015 and turned into a journal showcasing the explosion in writing talent in UCC. People are glad they did. The first incarnation of Quarryman last appeared in the 1980s, when poet Thomas Mc Carthy described the era as creating a “new Munster movement in poetry”. The 2016 edition of Quarryman shows off the next generation of writing and writers from UCC, building on the experience of that tradition. It’s inclusion of flash fiction and huge range of voices, shows us that the writing tradition in UCC is in good hands.
